Dubai has taken the world of extreme sports to new heights with the world’s first jet suit race.

Daring pilots donned jet-powered suits and raced through the skies above the iconic Dubai Marina, leaving spectators in awe. The Dubai jet suit race not only showcased cutting-edge wearable tech but also Dubai’s ambition to lead innovation in the world of aerial sports.

The Dubai Jet Suit Grand Prix

Hosted in late February 2024, pilots strap on 1,500-horsepower jet suits and compete in a high-octane race over the waters of Dubai Marina.

Organized by Gravity Industries and the Dubai Sports Council, the event drew pilots from around the world vying for the top spot.

With jet engines strapped to their arms and backs, racers navigated an aerial obstacle course at speeds up to 80 mph, all against the breathtaking backdrop of Dubai’s futuristic skyline.

The spectacle not only showcased remarkable human achievement but also highlighted Dubai’s commitment to pushing boundaries and hosting extraordinary events.

Mitigating Risks in Dubai Jet Suit Race

Safety remained the top priority throughout the event. All races were held over water to mitigate risks, and pilots underwent rigorous training.

However, the inherent dangers of jet-suit racing were evident when Emirati pilot Ahmed al-Shehhi crashed into the water during his heat.

Despite only 12 days of training, al-Shehhi emerged unscathed, a testament to the organizers’ focus on precautions. “Everything is hot, it’s running, the engines are screaming at you.

The flag drops, and it’s just—you go for it”, said winner Issa Kalfon, acknowledging the adrenaline rush and risks involved.

Into the Future: Dubai’s Vision for Urban Air Mobility

While jet suit racing may seem like a niche endeavor, the event underscored Dubai’s broader ambitions in the realm of urban air mobility.

The city has been actively pursuing flying taxi initiatives, recognizing the potential for transformative transportation solutions.

Richard Browning, founder of Gravity Industries, believes jet suit technology could have practical applications, saying, “We’ve got the closest I think anybody’s ever got to delivering [the dream of human flight] for real.”

Making the Dubai Jet Suit Grand Prix a reality requires months of meticulous planning and preparation.

From designing the aerial race course to coordinating safety protocols, organizers left no stone unturned.
