The automotive industry is often judged by what people can see: the badge on the bonnet, the shine of the finish, the power beneath the hood. Yet the real story lies in what remains unseen: the chemistry that protects an engine under pressure, the precision that extends performance, and the systems that keep movement uninterrupted. It is a field where excellence is rarely loud, but always felt, in every smooth start, every long-distance journey, and every machine that continues to perform long after expectation.

This commitment to reliability and trust is reflected in the work Melicia Labuschagne leads as CEO and Managing Director of Liqui Moly South Africa. Leading the South African operations of the globally renowned German lubricants and automotive care brand, she has helped shape the company into a name associated not only with premium performance products but also with integrity, service, and long-term customer relationships.

The Foundation of Her Leadership

When Melicia began her journey with Liqui Moly South Africa in 2007, there was no customer base, no infrastructure, and no established systems in place. What existed instead was belief, determination, and the willingness to build everything from the ground up.

“I started with absolutely nothing,” she says. “There were no customers, no warehouse systems, no processes, just the vision that this could become something meaningful.”

In those early days, she stepped into every role the business needed. She was the receptionist, the forklift driver, the sales representative, and even the technical advisor, doing whatever it took to keep the business moving forward. That hands-on experience became the foundation of how she leads today.

“When you have done every job yourself, you lead differently. You understand the pressure, the people, and the importance of every single role. You do not lead from a distance because you know exactly what it takes on the ground.” – Melicia Labuschagne.

What shaped her most, however, was not success, but the challenges she faced along the way. Building from zero, overcoming setbacks, and learning difficult lessons about trust and integrity taught her to value actions over words and principles over shortcuts.

“Easy wins do not build you. Challenges do. That is where you learn who you are, who people really are, and what kind of leader you want to become.” – Melicia Labuschagne

For Melicia, leadership has never been about position or authority. It is rooted in responsibility, commitment, and the ability to build something people can truly trust.

Integrity at the Core of Every Decision

With more than eighteen years of experience in business development and operational leadership, Melicia has built her leadership philosophy around one non-negotiable principle: integrity.

“If something does not feel right, it usually is not,” she says. “I have learned that your instinct is often your first and most honest guide in business. Leadership is not just about making decisions quickly; it is about making the right decisions for the long term.”

For her, every decision begins with trust, instinct, and alignment with the values the business stands for. While speed matters because momentum matters, she believes decisions involving people require far greater care and thoughtfulness.

“When it comes to people, you cannot rush. Those decisions shape relationships, loyalty, culture, and the environment people work in every day. That deserves real consideration.” – Melicia Labuschagne

She also leads with a strong, solution-driven mindset and expects the same from those around her. Problems, in her view, should never be presented without the willingness to think through possible solutions and learn from mistakes.

“I have never believed in bringing problems without solutions. Anyone can point out what is wrong. What matters is bringing solutions, learning from what went wrong, and making sure it does not happen again.” – Melicia Labuschagne

At the center of every decision, she asks two simple questions: Does it add value, and does it align with who we are?

Global Legacy, Local Connection

“Our German roots give us a strong foundation, quality, precision, consistency, but that is only part of the story,” Melicia says. “German engineering represents reliability, discipline, and a standard of excellence that customers immediately recognize. That trust matters, but what really matters is how we make that global excellence feel local, personal, and relevant.”

For her, Liqui Moly’s success in South Africa has never been about simply selling products. It is about building meaningful relationships with customers and partners and understanding the realities they face every day. Technical excellence alone is not enough if people do not feel understood.

“You cannot lead with product alone. People need to feel understood. They need to know you are solving real problems, not just offering a solution on paper.” – Melicia Labuschagne

That means helping customers achieve better performance, longer-lasting equipment, and greater peace of mind in their day-to-day operations. It is about turning a global brand into something people feel connected to and can trust on a personal level.

“Our goal is to make a world-class brand feel close to home,” she says. “That is where trust is built, and that is where lasting relationships begin.”

Creating a Lane of Her Own

“I have never believed in blending in,” Melicia says. “If you are only doing what everyone else is doing, you are always one step behind. Real growth comes from knowing what makes you different and having the confidence to lead with that.”

For her, success has never been about following the market or competing to be the cheapest option. It has always been about creating a unique space built on value, trust, and customer experience. “We do not ask how to compete; we ask how to add more value. That is where real differentiation comes from. Price may win attention for a moment, but value builds loyalty.” – Melicia Labuschagne

This mindset shapes every part of how she leads the business, from staying ahead of market trends to being bold in how the brand presents itself and maintaining consistency in delivery. For Melicia, standing out is never about being louder than competitors, but about being better, more dependable, and more memorable.

“You do not need to be the loudest voice in the room,” she says. “You need to be the one people remember for the right reasons.”

The Mindset Behind Meaningful Innovation

“Innovation is not a department, it is a mindset,” Melicia says. “If we are not constantly asking how to improve, we are already falling behind.”

For her, innovation goes far beyond product development. It shapes the way the business communicates, supports workshops, strengthens relationships, and creates better experiences for customers, partners, and distributors. Every part of the business is an opportunity to improve, simplify, and add value.

“We are always asking how we can do things better. How can we make this easier for the customer? How can we improve efficiency for our partners? How can we create more value in the way we serve people? That thinking has to be constant.” – Melicia Labuschagne

She also believes that pressure often becomes the greatest driver of innovation. Challenges force teams to think differently, adapt faster, and find better ways of operating. Rather than resisting difficult moments, she sees them as opportunities for growth.

“Pressure reveals everything,” she says. “It shows you where you need to improve, where you need to adapt, and where real growth can happen. Some of the best innovation comes when you are pushed to think differently.”

The Culture Behind Exceptional Service

Customer service remains one of the defining pillars of Melicia’s strategy. For her, service excellence begins with a simple principle: never treat customers as numbers. “The moment a customer feels like just another transaction, you have already lost something important,” she says. “People want to feel seen, heard, and valued, and that starts with how you show up for them every single day.”

True service, in her view, means consistency, careful listening, and a genuine effort to understand what customers actually need rather than assuming what is best for them. It is about delivering beyond expectations and building trust through every interaction. She believes exceptional service cannot simply be introduced as a process or policy because it has to come from the culture of the organization itself. “You cannot script genuine care,” she explains. “It has to be part of who your business is, not just something written in a manual.”

According to Melicia, consistency in service comes from ensuring that the team truly believes in the company’s values and mission. When people genuinely stand behind what the brand represents, service excellence becomes natural rather than forced. She also stresses the importance of leading by example, knowing that the standard she sets shapes the rest of the organization. “People do not follow what you say; they follow what you do. The way I lead becomes the benchmark for how the team serves our customers.” – Melicia Labuschagne

Building a Culture of Responsibility and Growth

For Melicia, company culture begins with responsibility and ownership. She believes strong businesses are built by people who take accountability, seek solutions, and genuinely care about their work. “Culture is not created by words on a wall,” she says. “It is built by the people who show up every day and choose to take ownership.”

She values growth, mindset, and willingness to improve over comfort or entitlement, placing strong importance on investing in people who are open to learning. “I can work with someone who is still learning, but not with someone who refuses to grow,” she explains.

She also believes passion comes naturally when people feel connected to a larger purpose. When employees understand the value of their work and how they contribute, commitment becomes stronger and more genuine. “When people know their work matters, passion follows naturally.” – Melicia Labuschagne

The Foundation Behind Sustainable Growth

As Managing Director, Melicia believes that growth without a strong foundation is risky. She stressed that commercial expansion must always be supported by strong systems, capable teams, and clear operational processes.

Before pursuing growth, she consistently asks whether the business can sustain it, whether the right people are in place, and whether consistent value can still be delivered at scale.

For her, scalable growth is only possible when the operational foundation is strong enough to support it without compromising quality or control.

Innovation, Trust, and the Road Ahead

Addressing the rapid evolution of the automotive sector, Melicia believes adaptability is essential to staying relevant. “Technology will keep changing and sustainability will keep shaping the industry, but customers still want the same things, quality, performance, and trust,” she says.

To prepare for the future, the company stays closely aligned with its global partners while continuously adapting to local market needs. She believes it is important not to react too late, but also not to chase trends without understanding their long-term value. “You have to know the difference between innovation and distraction.” – Melicia Labuschagne

Partnerships Built on Alignment

Melicia described partnerships as central to the company’s expansion strategy. For her, the most important quality in long-term relationships with distributors and stakeholders is alignment.

She looks for partners who share the same values, prioritize quality over shortcuts, and are committed to long-term growth rather than quick wins.

Trust, in her view, is the foundation of every successful partnership. Without aligned values, she believes no relationship can truly last. The goal is always to create partnerships where both sides grow together and create shared success.

Success Measured in Growth and Impact

For Melicia, success extends far beyond financial performance. While business growth and turnover remain important, she believes true success is measured through people and relationships. “Numbers show progress, but they are never the full story,” she says. “Real success is the trust you build and the people you help grow.”

She sees the development of her team, the impact on customers, and the strength of long-term relationships as the clearest indicators of achievement. Most importantly, she asks one simple question: has the business made people better than when it first encountered them? If the answer is yes, she considers that true success.

The Road to R1 Billion and Beyond

Looking ahead, Melicia’s vision for Liqui Moly South Africa is ambitious, but deeply rooted in purpose. She sees the brand becoming a household name and reaching a turnover of R1 billion before 2033, not simply as a financial milestone, but as a reflection of the value the business continues to create.

“Growth matters because it reflects the impact we are making,” she says. “But numbers alone are never the goal. I want to build something that lasts beyond targets and turnover, something people trust and believe in.”

For her, the bigger ambition is legacy. She wants the brand to be known not only for premium products, but for the way it supports people, builds relationships, and creates lasting confidence in every customer experience.

“At the end of the day, people remember how you made them feel. If people remember us for how we helped them grow, how we stood by them, and how we made a real difference, that is the legacy that matters most.” – Melicia Labuschagne
