Nestlé has announced a major leadership change, replacing Chief Executive Mark Schneider with Laurent Freixe, a long-serving executive within the company. This transition, effective September 1, marks a significant shift for the world’s largest food and beverage company as it grapples with the economic challenges affecting consumer spending.

Mark Schneider, who has led Nestlé since 2016, will step down from both his role as CEO and his position on the Board of Directors. Schneider’s departure comes after eight years at the helm, during which he faced increasing pressures due to rising living costs that have impacted consumer purchasing behavior.

Under Schneider’s leadership, Nestlé encountered a series of hurdles, including a recent reduction in its full-year sales forecast. The company has had to adjust its pricing strategy amid growing consumer sensitivity to costs, which has led to a slowdown in price increases. This adjustment follows a notable decline in Nestlé’s share value, which has dropped 8% in 2024, contrasting sharply with the performance of competitors such as Unilever, whose shares have surged by 29% over the same period.

Laurent Freixe, who will assume the CEO role, brings a wealth of experience to the position. Freixe joined Nestlé in 1986 and has been a prominent figure in the company for 16 years, most recently serving as CEO of Zone Americas. His extensive tenure at Nestlé and deep understanding of the company’s operations and markets position him as a familiar and knowledgeable successor.

As Nestlé navigates through these tumultuous times, the leadership change is expected to bring a renewed focus on stabilizing and steering the company through the evolving market landscape.
