Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province is poised for a remarkable tourism expansion following the approval of 17 new projects valued at over SR12.7 billion ($3.38 billion). This initiative is part of the Kingdom’s broader strategy to enhance its tourism offerings under the Saudi Tourism Development Fund. The developments will lead to the creation of more than 2,200 hotel rooms, marking a substantial boost to the region’s hospitality sector.
In addition, another 10 projects totaling over SR10.6 billion have also been greenlit, which will add an extra 1,400 hotel rooms. These initiatives reflect the ongoing commitment to strengthen the region’s tourism infrastructure and align with the ambitious goals outlined in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
Government Support and Investment Opportunities
The announcement was made during a meeting attended by Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb and various investors and entrepreneurs from the Eastern Province. Badr Al-Reziza, chairman of the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce, was also present, emphasizing the burgeoning investment opportunities within the tourism sector.
Al-Khateeb highlighted the unique geographical features and historical significance of the Eastern Province, positioning it as a premier tourist destination. “The region features extensive coastlines along the Arabian Gulf, providing unique opportunities for beach tourism,” he remarked, underscoring the area’s rich heritage that enhances its appeal to both local and international visitors.
Rising Tourist Numbers and Spending
The Eastern Province is already experiencing a surge in tourism activity, with recent statistics indicating that over 19 million tourists, both domestic and international, visited the region in 2023—a notable increase compared to previous years. Tourist spending reached SR27.8 billion, reflecting a 27 percent rise over the previous year.
Saudi Arabia’s overall tourism sector is thriving, having experienced a staggering 656 percent increase since 2019. The Ministry of Tourism anticipates welcoming approximately 17.5 million international visitors by 2024.
Employment and Economic Impact
Tourism has emerged as one of the largest sources of employment for Saudi citizens, with approximately 900,000 nationals currently employed in the sector. This substantial growth not only enhances the economy but also contributes to the overall well-being of communities across the Kingdom. As the Eastern Province prepares for its tourism boom, the outlook for the region remains bright, promising a vibrant future for both visitors and residents alike.
