Christopher Nolan has pulled off the impossible yet again. After months of intense secrecy, massive fan speculation, and sky-high expectations, the first reviews for The Odyssey have finally dropped. According to a report from India Today, the classical epic has absolutely shattered expectations, debuting to a spectacular 99% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

That near-perfect score instantly cements the movie as the best-reviewed project of Nolan’s entire career, even edging past benchmarks like The Dark Knight and his Oscar-sweeping masterpiece, Oppenheimer.

Critics Call it a Flawless Epic

The moment the review embargo lifted, the internet was flooded with absolute raves from global film critics. Almost universally, the three-hour film is being praised for its staggering scale, technical ambition, and surprising emotional weight.

Empire didn’t hold back, slapping a perfect five-star rating on the film and calling it “the definition of epic.” Meanwhile, The Telegraph boldly declared it the definitive “film of the year,” and The Times summarized the project simply as a “masterpiece in every way.”

Even reviews that pointed out minor flaws couldn’t help but marvel at the execution. Variety noted that the movie “thrills generously for the bulk of its near three-hour running time,” adding that Nolan casually drops massive action setpieces that would serve as the climax for any other summer blockbuster.

A few trade outlets, like The Hollywood Reporter, pointed out some slight pacing lulls in the second act, while the LA Times highlighted how Nolan boldly “cuts and rejiggers Homer” to tell a very modern story about trauma, memory, and the distortion of time.

A Powerhouse A-List Cast

Beyond Nolan’s visionary direction, the film’s massive ensemble cast is drawing immense praise. Matt Damon anchors the story, turning in a deeply weathered, grief-stricken performance as King Odysseus, a soldier desperately fighting cosmic odds to get back to Ithaca after the fall of Troy.

Damon is surrounded by a murderer’s row of Hollywood talent. Tom Holland plays his emotionally wounded son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway steps in as his fiercely enduring wife Penelope, and Robert Pattinson completely steals scenes as the cruel, calculating suitor Antinous.

With Zendaya rounding out the heavy hitters as the goddess Athena, The New York Times praised the star-studded lineup, calling the film an “anomalous big-studio entertainment” that carries the undeniable allure of Old Hollywood.

Massive Stakes at the Box Office

The astronomical critical reception comes as a massive sigh of relief for Universal Pictures. The Odyssey stands as a massive financial gamble, tracking as one of the most expensive R-rated films ever greenlit. Production costs reportedly ballooned to $250 million, backed by an additional $125 million global marketing campaign.

However, with critics completely unified and early box office tracking predicting a monster $200 million global opening weekend, Nolan looks well on his way to securing another billion-dollar milestone.

The Odyssey officially hits theaters worldwide on July 17.
