The Game of Thrones universe is finally moving from television to theaters. Warner Bros. has set Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for a June 1, 2029 theatrical release, making it the first feature film in the franchise. Owen Harris will direct, while Beau Willimon is writing the screenplay.
The release date answers one of the biggest questions surrounding the long-discussed Game of Thrones movie, but it does not mean the production is close to filming. There is still no announced cast or confirmed production start date, so much of the movie remains under wraps.
What is Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest about?
The movie will go back much further than House of the Dragon. It is centered on Aegon I Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Conqueror, whose campaign brought much of Westeros under Targaryen rule and established the political foundation for the Iron Throne.
This makes Aegon’s Conquest the earliest live-action story in the current Game of Thrones screen timeline. The events take place roughly 300 years before the original Game of Thrones, placing the film before both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon did not conquer Westeros alone. He launched the campaign with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, who were also his wives, and their three dragons: Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes. The campaign brought six of the Seven Kingdoms under his control, while Dorne successfully resisted.
That difference could become important to the film because the story is not simply another Targaryen succession battle. It is about the creation of the political system that later generations would fight to control.
Why Aegon’s Story is Different from House of The Dragon
House of the Dragon focuses on the Dance of the Dragons, a Targaryen civil war that tears the dynasty apart. Aegon’s Conquest, in contrast, begins with the expansion of Targaryen power and the creation of the realm that becomes central to the franchise.
There is also another narrative thread the film could potentially explore. House of the Dragon established Aegon’s belief in a prophecy concerning a future threat to Westeros, connecting his decision to unite the kingdoms with the larger mythology surrounding the Song of Ice and Fire. That connection gives the filmmakers an existing bridge between Aegon’s personal motives and the events audiences already know, although Warner Bros. has not confirmed how much of that material will appear in the movie.
Who is Making the Game of Thrones Movie?
Owen Harris is directing the film after working within the franchise already. He directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, including the episode featuring the Trial of Seven, giving him recent experience with the visual language and world of Westeros.
The screenplay comes from Beau Willimon, who created the U.S. version of House of Cards and worked as a writer on Andor. His involvement gives the project a writer with experience handling political conflict, which could suit a story built around conquest, alliances and competing rulers.
What Has Not Been Announced Yet?
Despite the release date, several major pieces of information are still missing.
There is no official cast announcement, so there is currently no confirmed actor for Aegon, Visenya, Rhaenys or the major rulers of Westeros. Warner Bros. has also not announced when principal photography will begin or released a trailer, production stills or detailed plot synopsis.
That makes the June 1, 2029 date more significant as a studio commitment than as an indication that the film is already deep into production.
Where Does Aegon’s Conquest Fit into the Game of Thrones Future?
The timing places the movie after several other major Westeros projects. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to continue with a second season in 2027, while House of the Dragon is expected to conclude with its fourth season in 2028. The film therefore arrives after the audience has already spent years moving through different periods of Targaryen history.
That could work in Aegon’s Conquest‘s favor. Viewers already know the Targaryens as a fallen dynasty, have seen their internal wars and have watched their influence return and disappear. The movie can go back to the moment when that dynasty was being built.
For Game of Thrones, the bigger development is not simply that the franchise is getting a movie. It is that Warner Bros. is choosing to tell one of the earliest and most consequential chapters in Westerosi history on the biggest screen yet.
The release date is June 1, 2029. The cast, production schedule and full story details are still to come.
