In 2000, amid the wreckage of South Korea’s financial crisis, two university professors made a decision that would ultimately change the lives of millions of people living with diabetes worldwide. Nam Hak-hyeon, then a professor at Kwangwoon University, co-founded i-SENS, Inc., not out of convenience, but from conviction: a belief that precision science, translated into reliable, affordable diagnostics, could genuinely improve human health.

Twenty-five years later, that conviction has compounded into something remarkable. Today, i-SENS serves patients in over 110 countries, manufactures 2.2 billion blood glucose test strips annually, and in 2023 achieved a milestone of national significance, the launch of CareSens™ Air, South Korea’s first domestically developed continuous glucose monitoring system. The company has also earned consumer trust relentlessly, winning the First Brand Award in the glucose meter category for 15 consecutive years.

As Founder & CEO, Dr. Nam stands at the intersection of science and strategy, leading a company that continues to challenge global medical device leaders through technology, quality, and an increasingly clear vision for the future of diabetes care.

From a Time of Crisis to a Legacy of Global Care

The journey of i-SENS began during one of South Korea’s most challenging economic periods, the IMF financial crisis of the late 1990s. While the crisis created uncertainty across industries, it also opened unexpected opportunities through a government policy that allowed university professors to simultaneously serve as company founders and CEOs. This initiative was designed to encourage technology-based entrepreneurship during the nation’s recovery.

With strong academic foundations in electrochemistry and biosensor research gained through postdoctoral work in the United States, Dr. Cha Geun-shik and the leadership team recognized an opportunity to transform laboratory science into practical healthcare solutions. In May 2000, i-SENS was founded with the conviction that world-class electrochemical biosensor technology developed in Korea could compete on a global stage.

The launch of the CareSens™ blood glucose meter in 2003 became a defining milestone. Delivering results in just five seconds from only a 0.5 microliter blood sample, the product demonstrated both scientific precision and market relevance. The company achieved profitability within its first year. Over time, milestones such as securing major international distribution agreements, obtaining FDA certification, and scaling production from thousands to billions of test strips helped shape i-SENS into a global leader serving patients in more than 110 countries, with nearly 80 percent of revenue coming from exports.

Creating a New Era in Continuous Glucose Monitoring

The launch of CareSens™ Air marked a historic achievement as Korea’s first domestically developed continuous glucose monitoring system. For i-SENS, this innovation represented far more than a technological advancement. It reflected a shift in how diabetes care could be approached.

Traditional blood glucose monitoring provides only single moment readings, offering snapshots rather than a continuous picture of a patient’s condition. Continuous glucose monitoring transforms this by delivering readings every five minutes, allowing patients to understand patterns linked to meals, exercise, sleep, and stress while also receiving alerts before dangerous drops become emergencies.

Developing such a system required expertise far beyond conventional glucose testing. The sensor needed to remain stable on the body over extended periods while maintaining accuracy despite temperature changes, movement, and the complexity of subcutaneous tissue. Clinical data validated through peer-reviewed multi-center studies demonstrated accuracy that stood competitively alongside international systems.

Approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in September 2023, CareSens™ Air became the longest-wearing CGM developed in Korea at launch. The company has since advanced to an improved version that enhances ease of use for patients and strengthens Korea’s position as an innovator rather than a follower in medical device technology.

The Science Powering Every Critical Decision

Electrochemistry remains the core strength of i-SENS and one of its most significant competitive advantages. Electrochemical biosensors convert biological signals into electrical signals with exceptional sensitivity and speed, enabling highly efficient diagnostic solutions.

This technology powers the CareSens™ blood glucose meters, which deliver accurate results from just 0.5 microliters of blood in five seconds. Such improvements reduce pain, save time, and simplify testing for patients, especially children, elderly individuals, and those managing diabetes during difficult hours of the day.

The same platform also drives advanced products like the i-Smart® 300, which simultaneously analyzes pH, pO₂, pCO₂, electrolytes, glucose, and lactate in only 50 seconds using just 100 microliters of whole blood. This rapid access to critical diagnostic data supports intensive care and emergency medicine, where speed and accuracy are essential.

Looking ahead, i-SENS sees the future of point-of-care diagnostics built around miniaturization, connectivity, and expanded analyte panels. Smaller, more durable, and affordable sensors, seamless data transmission to clinical systems and patient applications, and broader diagnostic panels from a single sample represent the company’s next frontier.

Trust That Crosses Borders

For i-SENS, global expansion has always been rooted in trust rather than logistics alone. In medical devices, confidence from regulators, distributors, healthcare professionals, and patients is essential for sustainable international growth.

The company has strategically combined two expansion models. In many regions, it works with trusted distribution partners who understand local regulatory environments, healthcare systems, and patient expectations. These partners contribute local expertise while i-SENS provides technological excellence and manufacturing strength.

In key markets such as the United States, Japan, and Western Europe, the company has chosen to directly invest in building the CareSens™ brand itself. This approach reflects a deliberate decision to create stronger brand equity where long-term opportunities justify direct presence.

This strategy is supported by significant manufacturing scale, with 2.2 billion test strips produced annually across facilities in Korea and China. The recent partnership with LifeScan, through which CGM technology will reach patients under the OneTouch™ Vita brand in select European markets, represents another major step in combining strong partnerships with global technological leadership.

Turning Continuous Monitoring into Everyday Care

The future of continuous glucose monitoring, according to i-SENS, lies not only in futuristic technologies but in solving the adoption gap that exists today. The largest and fastest-growing diabetes population globally is people with Type 2 diabetes, yet most still rely on infrequent blood glucose spot checks.

Expanding practical and affordable CGM access for this population is seen as the greatest clinical opportunity over the next five years. This includes ensuring reimbursement accessibility, cost effectiveness, and ease of use.

CareSens™ Air has already demonstrated strong clinical performance through published multi-center trials, but i-SENS continues to improve sensor accuracy through advancements in chemistry, algorithm design, and manufacturing consistency.

CareSens™ Air 2 represents the next major step. It extends wear duration to 18 days, features a sensor 70 percent smaller than the first generation, and simplifies the patient experience by removing manual steps. Regulatory pathways for Korean and European launches are progressing on schedule, while clinical activities for the United States market are also underway.

With strong double-digit growth in CGM sales, i-SENS is reinforcing the momentum behind its commercial strategy while preparing for significantly greater expansion over the next five years. The company has invested in dedicated manufacturing infrastructure in Incheon Songdo to support rising global demand and strengthen long-term production capabilities. At the same time, strategic partnerships such as the collaboration with LifeScan, which will begin in select European markets and is expected to expand further as results continue to strengthen, are providing an important platform for the next phase of CareSens™ Air. Through these combined efforts, i-SENS is positioning itself for the next level of growth, driven by steady progress, solid execution, continuous investment, and trust built over time.

A Culture Where Innovation Never Stops

The innovation culture at i-SENS is deeply rooted in its academic origins. Since the company was born from a university laboratory environment, scientific rigor remains central to every stage of growth.

The leadership believes that scientific excellence and commercial success are not opposing forces but complementary drivers of long-term sustainability. Strong science creates durable products, while commercial success funds the next generation of innovation.

This philosophy is reflected in the company’s R&D structure, which emphasizes autonomy, sustained investment, and long-term thinking. The research facility was established in 2002, only two years after the company’s founding, reinforcing the belief that proprietary technology would remain the company’s strongest competitive advantage.

A mindset of what leadership calls principled impatience also drives progress. Even when the first CareSens™ Air launched, teams were already developing the next version. No product is ever considered finished.

For i-SENS, innovation is not a final destination but a continuous process, guided by the belief that there is always a better version ahead.

Diversification as a Natural Path to Long-Term Growth

For i-SENS, diversification is viewed not as a defensive move but as a natural extension of its core scientific strength. The company’s competitive advantage lies in electrochemical biosensor technology, and its relevance reaches far beyond blood glucose monitoring alone.

The same scientific platform that powers glucose measurement can also be applied to a wide range of clinically important analytes, including blood gases, electrolytes, lactate, and hemoglobin. This allows i-SENS to expand its diagnostic portfolio while remaining firmly rooted in its original expertise.

From a strategic perspective, diversification also creates resilience. A broader and more stable revenue base supports the company’s ability to continue investing in long term research and development, particularly in areas such as continuous glucose monitoring, which require sustained commitment over several years.

The company’s broader ambition is to evolve into a comprehensive point of care diagnostics leader, delivering fast, precise, and connected diagnostic solutions across hospitals, clinics, and home care settings.

Precision and Reliability as a Non-Negotiable Standard

At i-SENS, quality is not treated as a process but as an operating philosophy. Diagnostic devices are often used to guide life-critical decisions such as insulin administration, medication adjustments, or emergency interventions, leaving no room for error.

The company approaches this responsibility through a deeply integrated quality system that includes strict manufacturing frameworks, statistical process control throughout production lines, and product designs built for real-world conditions. Devices are optimized to maintain reliability across variations in altitude, temperature, humidity, and hematocrit levels.

This commitment to precision has been consistently validated by consumer trust. CareSens™ has received the First Brand Award in the glucose meter category for 15 consecutive years, from 2012 through 2026, with the recognition based entirely on consumer votes.

This long-standing trust reflects the confidence that hundreds of thousands of users continue to place in i-SENS year after year.

Making Advanced Technology Feel Effortless

Balancing scientific sophistication with simplicity remains one of the most important design challenges in healthcare technology. For i-SENS, true innovation means ensuring that complex science becomes invisible to the user.

Patients managing diabetes do not need to understand electrochemistry. They need devices that work reliably, reduce discomfort, save time, and fit naturally into daily life. Every engineering decision, from blood sample volume to result display, app interfaces, and alert logic, begins with the perspective of the person using the device.

When developing CareSens™ Air, the company invested significant effort into understanding patient behavior. Questions such as when people stop wearing a device, what causes removal, and which features patients actually use became central to product design.

The move toward a simplified user experience, particularly removing unnecessary manual steps, came directly from patient feedback. These extra steps were consistently identified as major barriers to adoption.

The goal is to make the device blend seamlessly into everyday life. When that happens, patient adherence improves, data quality becomes more consistent, and ultimately better health outcomes follow.

A Meaningful Breakthrough

Among many achievements, the leadership of i-SENS views the greatest accomplishment not as a single award but as the company’s ability to maintain its scientific standards consistently over 25 years while growing into a global business.

If one defining moment stands above the rest, it is the approval and launch of CareSens™ Air in 2023. As Korea’s first domestically developed continuous glucose monitoring system, it represented the culmination of more than two decades of expertise in electrochemistry, manufacturing precision, clinical methodology, and regulatory capability.

Its significance extended beyond technical achievement. It symbolized the company’s ability to innovate at the highest level of its field and move from being a participant in the market to becoming a leader within it.

The emotional meaning of this milestone was also reinforced through the documentary film Sugar, which followed individuals living with Type 1 diabetes. Continuous glucose monitoring was shown not as a medical tool alone, but as something that reduces anxiety, restores confidence, and allows patients to live without constant fear.

This deeper human impact is what gives CareSens™ Air its lasting significance.

Intelligence Behind Every Reading

Digital connectivity has already become a defining force in healthcare, and i-SENS is actively building its future around this transformation.

Its connected health strategy is structured across three levels. At the device level, Bluetooth-enabled CareSens™ meters and CareSens™ Air CGM systems transmit data directly to smartphones. The CareSens™ N Premier app automatically synchronizes results, stores them securely in cloud infrastructure, and integrates with health ecosystems such as Apple Health and Google Fit.

This ensures that glucose data becomes part of the patient’s broader health record rather than remaining isolated within a single proprietary system.

At the care coordination level, the platform allows patients to share data seamlessly with healthcare professionals and family members while maintaining full control over privacy settings and access permissions. This improves consultations by giving physicians access to continuous glucose data before appointments.

At the intelligence level, i-SENS is building analytical systems that transform continuous data into meaningful clinical insights. Artificial intelligence is seen not only as a marketing concept, but as a practical clinical tool capable of supporting better decisions and more personalized diabetes management.

A Vision of Global Healthcare Leadership

The mission of i-SENS has always been clear: improving the lives of people with diabetes and those who care for them. Over the past 25 years, this mission has guided the company’s growth, and today that vision is expanding far beyond where it began.

At its foundation, i-SENS is a precision diagnostics company. The same technologies that support leadership in diabetes care are equally relevant in critical care, cardiac monitoring, and broader metabolic health management.

As the company’s portfolio grows and its global reach expands, it continues to pursue opportunities where its science can create meaningful clinical impact.

One of the most important priorities lies in addressing healthcare inequality. The global burden of diabetes remains heavily concentrated in lower and middle-income countries, where access to reliable diagnostics is often limited.

For i-SENS, making accurate and affordable diagnostic tools available to these populations is both a commercial opportunity and an ethical responsibility. Its global distribution network and manufacturing capacity position the company to serve these markets effectively.

Looking ahead, the company sees the next frontier in the full integration of sensing, connectivity, and intelligence into a unified platform that supports not only diabetes management but the broader challenge of metabolic health.

This is the future i-SENS is building toward, with the intention not only to participate in global healthcare leadership, but to help define it.. Regulators, distributors, healthcare professionals, and ultimately patients need confidence in the product.”
